Firstly to get an estimate on the size of the blogosphere we turn to studies over at Technorati. There are several separate studies into the actual number of blogs in existence. Most are Wordpress blogs but there are other platforms out their to blog from.

  • comScore MediaMetrix says (August 2008)
  • eMarketer says 22.6 million are US bloggers (May 2008)
  • Universal McCann says 184 million people worldwide have a blog (March 2008). They also say that 77% of active Internet users read blogs.

Bloggers Blog But Why?

  1. Communication - sparking conversations regarding a timely event or interest
  2. Information - in the process of writing a quality post they gain further knowledge of the topic
  3. Influence - stating your opinion to the world and aligning others to your view
  4. Fame - to increase popularity of their profile among others and get attention
