Twitter has come a long way in the past 3 years. To start off you could tell your friends that eggs were poached that morning, you can now share links, tweet within a specified subject matter, and keyword search the latest and tweets on your selected matter. Why is this special?

Google, uses complex algorithms to sort the internet. Twitter uses people you know to tell you what is on the internet. Which is better? Time will tell…

Shop sites can promote their products through it, you can share links to worthy reads through it, and help bring traffic to your blog with Twitter.

As Blog Monies is all about blogging for money to hopefully go into business yourself and Wordpress is my favourite CMS, the following is my Top 52 list as we come to the end of 2009.

Suhail is a successful business entreprenuer based in Bahrain. He runs a fitness club and is a marketing consultant. Suhail’s words of wisdom are in quotations below and BM is simply Blog Monies.

7 Tips on Marketing Yourself to the Masses

Suhail says “Keep the Goal in Mind - Don’t Be Overly Entertaining”

BM: If you are blogging for fun and to entertain people then continue to do so. But the fact is, you are at a site called BlogMonies! The real goal is to sell your product or service.

“Avoid Business Speak”Instead of “We provide integrated marketing solutions to our client base”

Try the following, “We work hard to increase your sales and profits and to make you happy!”BM: Your readers will enjoy being spoken to with warm familiar language. Cold marketing speak stays in the text book.

“Show Yourself!”

BM: Put pictures of yourself on your website. That way your readers can relate to you and know they are interacting with a real human at the other end of the technology. See Suhail’s blog along with his own youtube chats for an example.

Use “I” Instead of “WE”

We are happy to meet your needs as our customer solution of high priority… BORING

I guarantee 100% satisfaction or your money back in 30 days! BETTER

“Open Up and Share Your Life”

BM: You are human and so is your customer. Share your personal insights about life in your communications with your customer. Newsletters, blogs, emails, twitter, facebook, myspace… Think outside the square. The more they can relate to you, the more trustworthy you become and happier to be loyal to your business.

“Professionalism is Overrated”

Suhail says, “Lighten up! There’s a business-to-business company in the US that manufactures industrial fans. Their name is Big Ass Fans - really, I’m not kidding. Their logo is a donkey (ass).”

“Give Out Free Information and Education Tips”

Pack your newsletters full of informative tips. Advice that can actually solve problems for your customers. From this respect and trust will follow.

This allows you to use a comprehensive suite of applications to run your collaborative projects. It is not only a Website, it is Email, Calendar, Chat, and Document sharing.

As the administrator of Google Apps Standard Edition (Free) you grant logins to your readers and friends, give them the ability to communicate effectively via gmail accounts, google chat, a calendar planner and the sharing of spreadsheets and word docs. As a frontend Google Sites will allow the world to see what your community efforts have amounted to. These apps have been proven to work for entire universities therefore it will work for your internet project.

You can pay for premier (read more) to get 25GB storage but I will give you a low-down on the standard edition which is free. (read more from Google on Standard apps)

I am a business and want to use this professionally:

The current Google offer (Jul 09) for premier is:
$50 per user per year after trial

What FREE services do they provide?

GMAIL - I am a fan of gmail and use it over other free email services for the past 4 years. I think Hotmail sux. Gmail is clean, simple, works off slow connections and provides an amazing amount of free storage space. (It is 3GB and counting…) Within the gmail page is a sidebar for inbox folders and googlechat to see when your contacts are also using gmail.

If you own your own domain name you can point the MX entries to the Google mail servers and get customized emails. ie: johnny@domain.com

Set your MX entries up like this and get Google to manage your mail with heaps of GB storage for free - how good is that? One for each user of your community

ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM 10
ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM 20
ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM 20
ASPMX2.GOOGLEMAIL.COM 30
ASPMX3.GOOGLEMAIL.COM 30
ASPMX4.GOOGLEMAIL.COM 30
ASPMX5.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. 30

CALENDAR - Organize your schedule and share events with friends

DOCS - Share online documents, presentations, and spreadsheets

SITES - Create websites and group wikis. Read more on using Google Sites.

STORAGE - 10GB for free to store all your docs and sites info. (This is not an FTP server, you cant dump whatever you want up there - use Mozy for that)

The Price is Right

For a free service this is pretty damn good. I guess if you are one of those people who hate Google then do not use this option. But I personally like what they have done for the internet in recent years. They have turned a sprawling chaotic mess (the internet) into an efficient tool through Search and now provide free easy-to-use services for everyone to utilize.

But for complete control pay for private hosting. I currently use Bluehost as they have all the simple scripts to quickly setup whatever platform you could possibly want. For a free option - use Google Apps.

Final Verdict

Google Apps lets you setup massive web communities for free. Find a niche, get a domain name (can get it with google for $10), setup an online collaboration.

Domain values certainly are not skyrocketing at the moment. When you look at Top Level Domains (.net, .com, .org) the numerical growth is still good at 12% for since Q1 of 2008. In regards to Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTLD) things are even better with an increase of registrations of 18% (to 74 Mill).

So the internet is getting bigger right? Well, maybe…

1. Domain Parking Saturation

It could just be a lot of domainers sitting on one page ad pages. These guys simply buy domains, put up ads and sit back trying to get PPC revenue. (I went through a phase where I became a domaining addict)

It doesn’t really make the Internet bigger or better - it simply means people have many more ways of clicking through links to get to their destination (albeit an advertised destination). Is the internet better for this? No, not really IMHO.

There is a saturation of these ‘parked’ domains with people simply stumbling upon these ad front pages and thinking ‘OMG not another’ then click back on their browser. The worlds internet users are becoming more intelligent to ad pages and the reality is on the other end of ad links is something you ain’t interested in.

Generating traffic to these parked pages will get harder and harder because no-one likes not finding what they want on the internet.

2. Potential Buyers Go Bust

Money isn’t where it used to be. Jobs are being cut, property markets are low, the majority of the world’s attitude to money has become that of frugality. They ask themselves, ‘Do I really need this domain?’ as they consider if buying a smaller engine car would help their financial circumstance. Domains are financially a low priority in these times.

Of course there are buyers out there, just not as many pre global recessions days.

3. Why Type When You Can Search

Google Chrome comes to mind. Type in blog monies in the ‘URL’/'Search’ bar and you’ll hit my site. I could have bought blogmonies.biz if blogmonies.com was being parked and due to my outstanding SEO skills came up top result. On that, drop-down suggestions both in URL bar and search boxes are becoming more intelligent auto-completing what you are typing.

4. Why Type at All?

Portals. Stumbleupon.com, Twitter, Facebook, Boing Boing… A massive popularity contest calculation is executed and the top 10 suggested viewings are spat out at you as you open your browser’s homepage. No domain typing involved with this kind of surfer.

5. Top Level Domains are Expanding Every Month

Why buy a dot com when there are over 250 other two-letter ccTLDs (au, in, cn, us, uk…)

How about gTLDs - asia, .cat, .jobs, .mobi, .tel and .travel

I am counting roughly 270 different domains (check the forums)

Highest value is .com, then .net, then… yeah whatever…

The Solution to This Domaining Mess?

Domain Development. Choose a good name, put a blog on it, write good content, get traffic and link backs. Punch it into Website Outlook and get a rough idea of the value YOU have brought to your domain. Yes you can be a domainer and sit on domains but the reality is you won’t make squat unless you develop them domain names then sell.

What is a JOB ?

A job is where your trade your time for money. A job is where your employer controls your life and you do not (from 9 til 5). A job is where you work for a boss who may be less competent than you and as frustrating as that is you cannot ever do anything about that unless:

You learn to work smarter not harder.

Examples of Working Smart

Obtain assets (property) that generate income (rent) for you.

Create assets (posts) that generate income (ad revenue) for you.

The concept is the same for investment property, share portfolios and internet business. Work smarter not harder. This concept is why the Monies network exists. And yes – you have heard this before. It is not new.

Why is Internet Business such a Big Thing?

Minimal Money Down – Set it up, see if it works, and if it does then start sinking money into the project if it ‘has legs’. Approximately 60% of my domains I have purchased for a possible niche market have fallen flat on their face. I don’t let it get to me –I just try again. Remember – Edison attempted to invent the light bulb 9999 times before he hit the switch.

Minimal Down Time – 24 hours and 7 days a week. “It makes money when you sleep” – I am so sick of hearing that J The only time it may be down is for ‘technical difficulties’ in which case have an outsourced tech email address handy for your clients

Minimal Overheads – No expensive CBD locations to lease, no highly trained staff to keep happy, just you and the machine. Of course you need to own a domain and host it ($100/year is trivial) If you are not capable to tinker with your website you can always hire a programmer to do so for you. But essentially – when you’re happy with your site it runs itself!

Minimal Intervention – You own a business when you can walk away and come back many months later and money is still profitably coming in. If not – you have a J.O.B. The Internet is a systemised automated beast – you just have to sit back and supervise it.

Maximum Market – The interconnected world. It doesn’t matter where you travel to you are likely to find an internet cafe somewhere. Telecommunications and Information Technology infrastructure is unstoppable. You need to get your business out there and start providing solutions.

Minimal Time on Product Delivery – ship your intellectual property to your clients by the time your product launch nibbles are finished. eBooks, DVDs, 3D model plans, music, in-depth analysis. Stop wasting time, get an email list and start backing your own e-launch now!

Minimal Advertising Fees – Google AdSense is relatively cheap compared to putting a half-pager in your local newspaper or getting a 30 blip in between segments for Radio 1.

Break free from the Shackles – Technically you can communicate to your business from anywhere in the world. Pack a travel laptop and become a road warrior. Adjust spreadsheets in collaborative forums, set up Video Teleconferencing, podcasts, webinars or simply be boring and email. You are free to move your office cubicle to beach in Boracay.

Now what?

Don’t quit until you have a plan. It is easy to start establishing an online business whilst conducting mindless servitude day in and day out. Read some of the following posts and get started.
